With a playing style strongly reminiscent of John Martyns ‘Solid Air’ days and a writing style heavily influenced by the same, with generous helpings of Todd Rundgren, Joni Mitchell, World Party and Nick Drake, Al’s true calling has always been the live performance of his original blues and folk tinged set.

Urged by the late great virtuoso guitarist Eric Roche to get out there and play, Al has gone on to gig intensively since 2006, playing support slots with artists including Martin Carthy, Tina Dico, as well as Cambridge Folk Festival, Ely Folk Festival, and The High Barn Guitar Festival.

Thoughts on song writing

Song writing for me has been an impulsive urge that I've been unable to cure myself of since being a kid. My debut album was called Songs From Under The Table because I wrote my very first song when I was ten, sitting under the family dining table.

Sometimes the songs just pop into my head fully formed and I can hear all the parts, the melody, and the production style, all at once. Other times they come to me in dreams, and I can get one after another night after night. The trick there is to realize you are dreaming and to keep the tune going round in your head as you wake up and then instantly get it down into a Dictaphone before you forget it.......
